History of Alveley

A village steeped in history

Alveley's church dates back to the 12th century. Alveley has several historic pubs, including the oldest pub in Shropshire, The Three Horseshoes which dates back to the 17th century.

From 1937 to 1969, the village had a coal mine, in conjunction with Highley across the river and mining has played an important role within the community's history.

The Alveley Cricket Club was founded in 1908.

The Black Death is said to have killed 60% of the village population in 1349. A stone cross, the Buttercross, 2 miles (3 km) outside the village dates from the time of the Black Death when it was a place for food to be left for the village when it was quarantined.
